Inhabitat’s Week in Green: Solar cars, solar boats, solar… gold?

This week Inhabitat peered into the future of green tech as we liveblogged the most exciting moments from this year’s Greener Gadgets Conference. The highlight of the day was the on-stage live-judging and announcement of this year’s Greener Gadgets design competition winner, the AUG/Living Goods Program. Renowned industrial designer Yves Béhar also wowed us by unveiling a brand new design for a “Hackable” solar-electric car that is composed of modular components. (Engadget liveblogged it here.)

Speaking of sun-powered vehicles, Hungarian auto company Antro has just unveiled plans to create an out-there yet undeniably cool solar-powered car that splits into two vehicles. And for those looking to ride the seas in style, take a long, hard look at this giant solar boat. Then again, why ride a conventional vehicle when you could hop aboard this insane futurictic crawler town on wheels? Too bad it’s made out of LEGOs.

Finally, we brought to light several illuminating energy projects: researchers have found a way to generate electricity by shining light on tiny gold nanoparticles, opening the door for self-powered molecular machines, and Phillips unveiled a blooming solar street lamp that soaks up energy during the day and uses it to light up the night.

Philips breathes new life into home stereos with SoundSphere

Philips has been on somewhat of a roll with new releases overseas, and the outfit’s new SoundSphere might just be the most intriguing yet. Generally speaking, home stereos don’t do much for us, but the minty fresh MCi900 and MCD900 definitely add a fresh touch on an age-old concept. Both systems are equipped with a pair of speakers, 100 watts of amplification and “free floating” tweeters that are outside of the enclosure. The shells themselves are molded from a single piece of aluminum, and there’s also an integrated CD player and USB socket on the both of ‘em. The former gets a Streamium logo and a 160GB hard drive, support for internet radio and wireless streaming with networked PCs or Macs. There’s no mention of a price just yet, and potentially more disheartening, no indication that we unimportant Americans will ever see it on our soil.

Philips Cam, Muse and Ariaz mark a renaissance for the boring PMP

This is soon enough to market that it’s hard to blame the iPod nano specifically for its appearance, but either way it seems that the Philips Cam is the newest member to the oh-so-small club of MP3 / camera combos. The new player is joined in its life of crime by the new Muse and Ariaz, which at last offer a higher-end aspect to Philips‘ long-lackluster PMP lineup. The Cam does up a 1.8-inch screen, 8GB of storage and a 2 megapixel camera for $100, but the Muse has a full 3.2-inches of touchscreen, 16GB of flash, SD expansion and HDMI out for a mere $50 more. The Ariaz finds a simpler calling, with a 2.4-inch LCD, HDMI, 8GB and an $80 tag. We’ll have to play with these to see if they’re worth taking home from Walmart, but we’re glad to see Philips is trying to stay in the game — we can’t all be lucky enough to be Zune HD owners.

Philips delivers three new lines of Eco LED TVs

The new Philips / Funai combo P&F is promising a sweet look on the face of being green with its stylish Eco TV series. Check the press releases after the break, but the 4000, 5000 and ultimately 7000 series climb the ladder predictably in sizes and price. Key in 2010 is the introduction of Netflix streaming, internet radio and Blockbuster Video On Demand on some models and even HDMI 1.4 jacks on the top of the line 7000 models. Another bonus over the big boys? Actual prices and ship dates have been revealed. Check after the break for another shot of the 7000 and every detail you could ever ask for.

Philips / Funai updates Blu-ray players with Netflix streaming

Now that Funai owns the Philips brand name in the U.S., it isn’t hesitating to roll out a host of Blu-ray players featuring Netflix Watch Instantly streaming under that banner. The BDP5110 and 5320 (pictured above) are both BD-Live players that add vTuner Internet radio as well, while the 5110 will arrive in Q1 for $169, the BDP5320 includes a WiFi dongle and should ship around the same time for $249. At the top of the line sits the BDP7320 (pictured after the break) with all of those features plus DLNA access to stream video from networked devices or PCs, due in Q2 for $279.

Funai, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp and Toshiba to launch Netflix-enabled HDTVs or Blu-ray decks

Having Netflix access on your home entertainment device was a luxury in 2009 — in 2010, it’ll be commonplace. We already heard yesterday that Sharp was fixing to integrate the service into its NetCast library, and today the prolific movie rental service has announced that Funai (which distributes Philips, Magnavox, Sylvania and Emerson brands), Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp and Toshiba will all be introducing Netflix-ready devices this year. That means that each of those outfits will be pushing out Netflix-enabled HDTVs of Blu-ray Disc players in the year 2010, so you can plan on being in quite the pickle here soon if intentionally shopping for one of those two that doesn’t have access to your Watch Instantly queue. In fact, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has been quoted as saying that he expects “instant streaming of movies from Netflix to be available on more than one hundred different partner products in 2010,” so we’re pretty confident that Coby and Hannspree will be joining the fray in short order.

Philips CushionSpeaker coming to America this April for $80

Hear that? That’s the sound of millions of Yanks celebrating in unison. Why the joviality? Because Philips’ CushionSpeaker is coming to America, of course! The device — which simultaneously serves as a lap-based laptop cushion / stand and an external speaker system — first made waves last September when it debuted in Europe, but now that USers have evidently proven that they need one too, they’re getting exactly what they want. We had a chance to tinker with the device, and largely, we agree with what has already been said. It’s a perfectly fine cushion for using your laptop while kicking back on the sofa, but the bass-less speaker leaves a lot to be desired. It’s set to ship to sofa sitters this April for $79.99, and if you’re interested in the $39.99 to $49.99 Notebook Sleeve, $49.99 Notebook SoundBar and a variety of other peripherals that now have a stateside release in their future, the full details are posted after the break.

Philips Activa fitness MP3 player reminds you to move
