Window G85HD PMP is somewhere between awesome and awkward
You know, the vast majority of Chinese PMPs are underwhelming, and we can’t say for sure that the Windows G85HD is any different, but the video walkthrough of the user interface has us interested at the very lease. Reportedly, the all-white, touchscreen-centric device packs a Rockchip RK2806 processor, a 4.3-inch panel (800 x 480), 3.5mm headphone jack, 720p video output, 8GB or 16GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot, FM radio tuner, a Chinese-English dictionary and support for a multitude of file formats. There’s nary a word on when and where you’ll be able to find this, but if you find yourself situated in Shenzhen, feel free to scope things out at the local market and fill us in.

JXD V3 handheld is confused, confusing and altogether interesting
We won’t front — there’s little chance we’d actually use JXD’s V3 handheld, but it’s not for lack of interest. This here PMP / game player hybrid isn’t apt to leave the shores of Asia, but for those in that neck of the woods, this unit offers up emulators for a slew of game consoles, a 4.3-inch display, a 5 megapixel camera and plenty of file format support to handle your favorite music and video. Reportedly, the device even features an FM radio tuner, and in case you’re curious as to why there are two D-pads on this thing, it’s because you’ll need ‘em to get through certain Game Boy / NES titles. Or so they say. We can’t say we’re stoked about the $112 price tag, but in a way, we’re kind of in love with the whole flip-top design.

Motorola Backflip spotted in the wilds of China
Motorola’s Backflip has yet to springboard itself over to AT&T, but those who call China home can hop on the bandwagon right away. Said phone — which sports a full touchscreen and a physical QWERTY thanks to the horizontal clamshell design — is now available from Moto’s Chinese portal for 4,298 Chinese yuan (in unlocked form), which translates to right around $630. While the rest of the world awaits the phone’s launch later this quarter, you can hit up Mobile.163.com for a downright beautiful gallery of in the wild shots. Go on, it’s safe. We think.

Ready for an update? Good. If you’re still using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (versions 5.01 to 
for some inexplicable reason, there’s a patch that you should probably install on the double — that is, if you’re a hardcore human rights activist that just might end up on a Chinese hit list. All kidding aside, the devs in Redmond have broken free from their usual monthly update cycle in order to push out a patch to fix the hole that was exploited by a group of sophisticated hackers last week. Refresh that Windows Update if you’re scared, or — you know — just download one of the many other free web browsers that are far, far superior to IE.

HD DVD rides again: TCL brings China Blue HD & Blu-ray together for a CES face-off
Ah, HD DVD, our old friend – we thought we’d never see you again. But there was no mistaking it, here’s the logo tucked away in Chinese manufacturer TCL’s booth on a China Blue HD deck next to a similar Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray demo appeared to be down when we stopped by making this not much of a fight — although with recent gains by CBHD like adding studio support from Paramount, it may want to take this challenger more seriously. We’ll move the threat level on this conflict to yellow.

Yeah, yeah — we’ve seen a fairly weak effort to ape the Pre before, but this… this is the knockoff webOS device your shady side has been waiting for. A dead ringer for the Palm Pre, the Cool K07 boasts a luscious 2.8-inch touchscreen (320 x 240 resolution), a T-Flash card slot, a 2 megapixel camera, inbuilt speaker, MP3 / MP4 player, a blazing fast connection to the web (GPRS, if you must know), Bluetooth, an FM radio tuner, alarm clock, a few games and room for 1,000 contacts. Granted, there’s none of that fancy “Synergy” stuff, and we’re guessing you won’t find any “cards” or “multitasking” here, but for $128 unlocked and room for the SIM card of your choice, how on Earth could you complain? Exactly. You can’t. Or maybe that’s just stunned silence we hear…

SmartQ V5 MID available now to a world that’s just stopped caring
When we first laid eyes on the SmartQ V5, we were pretty underwhelmed… yet another resistive touchscreen MID? We’re beginning to long for those halcyon days of late 2009 when an Android handheld was a thing of awe and wonder. Just a refresher: this guy features a 4.3-inch display, 600MHz ARM11 processor (which the brave among us can overclock to 800MHz), 256MB RAM, HDMI out, and more. Of some interest to the jaded gadget-head, this guy ships with Android, Ubuntu, and Windows CE 6.0 pre-installed — not a bad feature, if that’s your thing. If you poke around the Internets you should be able to find this bad boy for near $180.

QiGi’s Smartbook is more like a WinMo 6.5-powered MID
We’re going on the assumption here that the lads and ladies over at QiGi haven’t actually heard that “smartbooks” have a vaguely defined look and feel, as the outfit’s latest handheld definitely looks nothing like the smartbooks that we’ve seen emerge over the past few months. In fact, the Windows Mobile 6.5-equipped device looks more like a MID than anything else, boasting a 5-inch 800 x 480 display, only a few face-mounted buttons and 1GB of memory. Hit the read link if you’re interested in a poorly translated review, and good luck finding one of these in the open market (at least with an English-language operating system).

Malata’s R108T netvertible embraces touch, Windows 7
It’s been nearly three full years since we’ve heard a peep from Malata, but the outfit has chosen an opportune time to reemerge into the spotlight. The R108T netbook is one of the convertible variety, boasting a swiveling 10-inch touchscreen (similar to ASUS’ Eee PC T91) and Windows 7 to boot. Internally, things get a lot more boring — there’s a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 1.3 megapixel camera, WiFi, Ethernet, a pair of USB sockets, VGA output and a 3-in-1 card reader. We’re told that the asking price on this one will hover around $439, though there’s no clear indication that it’ll ever head stateside.
