HP rolls out ‘Let’s Do Amazing’ ad campaign

We’d already gotten word of HP’s new $40 million “Let’s Do Amazing” ad campaign earlier today, but the company has just now rolled out its first series of ads to give us some indication of how all that money is being spent. Somewhat curiously, for an ad campaign partly intended to reintroduce the HP brand to consumers, the ads stray pretty far beyond HP’s consumer products (including a trip to a UPS sorting facility and the Venetian’s IT department), but we do at least get to see Dr. Dre extol the benefits of HP Beats audio — not to mention a little beatboxing from Rhys Darby of “Flight of the Conchords,” who serves as the host of the ads. Head on past the break to check out the Dre ad and HP’s introduction video, and hit up the link below for the rest of the series.

Stihl’s autumn calendar automatically rips through to tomorrow

Unless they’re incredibly quiet or potentially explosive, you won’t find us waxing poetic (or even prosaic) about leaf blowers. But if a company that produced leaf blowers made a motorized calendar that tore off its own pages? We’d tell you about that in a heartbeat — even if the wonderfully wasteful contraption turned out to be a viral ad by agency Euro RSCG rather than an actual household organizer, and even if its pages aren’t nearly as saucy as Stihl’s usual NSFW fare. Believe it or not, there’s no blade inside that brushed aluminum shell; the process works by ripping out the bookbinding thread along the calendar’s spine using a motorized reel. Join us in celebrating the wonder of pressed dead wood floating to earth all by its lonesome with a short video after the break.

HP ropes in Dr. Dre for ‘Lets Do Amazing’ personality makeover

When you think about HP, do you think about printers or maybe IT outsourcing? How about HP smartphones, ever think of them? You do know that HP still sells iPAQs right? That’s ok, we have to remind ourselves too, occasionally, and therein lies the problem: most consumers don’t have any idea what HP’s 300,000 employees are up to… or even care (ever encountered a rabid HP fanboy before?). While the enthusiast community is certainly anticipating the release of HP’s Slate or next Voodoo device, you’d be hard pressed to find any “normal people” who have even heard of them. So what’s HP to do?

Starting this weekend, HP will be blitzing the airwaves with its first advertising campaign in more than five years. The $40 million, eight-week “Lets Do Amazing” campaign features a number of celebs like “zany” comedian Rhys Darby and photographer Annie Leibovitz in pitches meant to give the very serious company a lighthearted makeover while explaining what it does. Hell, even HP fave Dr. Dre was convinced to shill, though knowing HP they’ll probably use his given name of Andre Romelle Young.

HP Slate makes an appearance to show off Flash, stays for a rock concert

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/HP_Slate_makes_an_appearance_to_show_off_Flash’; It shouldn’t be any surprise that the HP Slate supports Flash, since it runs Windows 7, but we’ve seen so little of the device since Steve Ballmer first waved it around at CES that we’re still totally intrigued by this video from Adobe showing it in action. Yep, there it is, playing video, running casual Flash games, and using AIR applications. We also get a quick shot of the on-screen keyboard, which looks like a mildly tweaked version of the standard Windows 7 keyboard. We can’t say until we use it, but it certainly doesn’t look like it’ll be fun to type on. Interestingly, Flash is said to be hardware-accelerated on the Slate, which suggests something other than a bone-stock Atom setup in there — we’d guess it’s an Atom plus a Broadcom Crystal HD Accelerator, but there’s a chance it’s something else entirely. HP’s also posted up a new marketing video, which bears a striking resemblance to last night’s iPad commercial — until the end, which frankly makes no sense. Check ‘em both after the break.

[Thanks, Rick]

First iPad ad premieres during the Oscars

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/First_iPad_ad_premieres_during_the_Oscars’; Apple’s doing the Oscars up right tonight — not only was Steve Jobs making friends on the red carpet, but the company ran the first iPad ad just now during the broadcast. It’s pretty much what you’d expect out of an Apple ad, but, you know, more magical. Get ready for a blitz of these as we lead up to April 3. Video after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

LG’s Feeney robot mascot sells air conditioners… with style

LG’s new robot mascot has already been out and about for a little while, but it now finally has a name thanks to a recent contest — “Feeney” — and a whole new lease on life. Not content to simply be an average air conditioner spokesbot, Feeney has taken the job to new, CGI-enhanced heights, and shown that even Olympic dreams can come true, with the help of a Whisen air conditioner. But don’t take our word for it. See Feeney work his magic after the break.

Verizon ‘vampire’ ad rips off Twilight, sticks it to AT&T

Hey, remember how all the lawsuits got dropped over the holiday period and we thought AT&T and Verizon would finally start to coexist like mature entities engaged in a civilized industry? Yeah, that didn’t last very long. Verizon is back with a biting ad campaign that continues poking fun at AT&T’s 3G coverage. The consumer is appropriately a vampire, whereas the young maiden keen on being consumed turns out to be… well, it’s more fun if we just let you watch it without any more spoilers. Needless to say, it’s some of Verizon’s funniest work yet. Head on past the break to see it.

[Thanks, Jay]

How many oranges does it take to charge an Apple? (video)

We’ve seen lemons power a digital clock, and we’ve seen an Orange tent energize a gaggle of Apples. But have you ever wondered how many oranges it would take to charge just a single Apple? Name games aside, we have to hand it to Imperial Leisure, the company that executed a new iPhone-centered advertisement aimed at raising awareness for Jaffa oranges. We won’t spoil the whole thing for you, but we will say that you’ll be far hungrier after watching than you are right now. Video’s past the break, per usual.

[Thanks, forumz]

DirecTV suing Dish Network over Why Pay More ads, says there’s plenty of reasons

While we settle our disputes the old fashioned way (Judge Judy appearances) DirecTV’s taking its beef with recent Dish Network ads to a slightly different courtroom. The “Why Pay More” ad campaign has been running for the last year but it appears the latest “Man on the Street” spot (embedded after the break) is what has really upset DirecTV, claiming that its package costs around $20 a month more than Dish. The lawsuit filed Thursday claims the DirecTV services offers more, and higher quality channels than the one it’s being compared to, and according to Multichannel News, the company mentions many of the channels this ad is airing on aren’t a part of the Dish lineup being advertised. Of course, as long as it’s adding customers we don’t see Dish backing off the comparisons on its own anytime soon and you can just ask TiVo about how long it’s willing to take the heat in court.

VIZIO Super Bowl ad pushes internet connected HDTVs in a big way

We weren’t sure exactly what Beyonce, David Goes to the Dentist and Chocolate Rain all had in common, but VIZIO squeezed them all into its Super Bowl ad. Still striving to remake its reputation from being merely a cheap HDTV manufacturer to a premium one offering lots of features, the ad (embedded after the break) shows how it’s bringing “the best of the internet” with VIZIO Internet Apps. We still need to see if its picture quality will measure up and whether the widget experience has gotten any better (read: faster) in 2010 to be truly convinced, but a slick ad never hurt.
